Interesting Facts: This beautiful spring wildflower occurs in localized populations in the deep woodland areas of the preserve. The flower usually appears before the foliage is fully unfurled. The common names for this plant most often refer to the deep-red juice of the root when broken open which was often used as a native american dye and body paint. This plant will die if a flower or leaf is broken off.
