Interesting Facts: This early-blooming wildflower blooms in large colonies in all wooded areas of the preserve. The genus "phlox" of this plant means "flame" and the species "divaricata" comes from the word "divaricate" meaning "widely spread" so literally translated the name of this plant means "widely spreading flame."
