Interesting Facts: As its common name implies, this plant is the earliest NATIVE blooming wildflower in the preserve. While it is common throughout the woods of the preserve, it is well camouflaged and can be easily overlooked. The other common name, "Pepper and Salt" refers to the stark difference between the black "pepper-like" stamens and the white "salt-like" petals.
